Hello!

I have the opportunity to acquire a 22' sailboat. This boat is currently in
the US. I am currently in Canada. I was wondering if anyone can help me
with the logistics of this. I will not be sailing the boat into Canada, I
will be driving it. It's on a trailer.

Can anyone help me?

Thanks,

Steve.

Steve,
Just trailer it back and declare it at customs and they will charge you
GST, maybe PST, and give you the registration numbers if the outboard is
10 H.P. or more or if you plan to use a 10 H.P. or more motor. That is
it. Have the bill of sales and make sure that the boat was either made
in the U.S. or Canada. If it was made elsewhere then there will be duty
on top of the GST.
It is as simple as that. I did a couple of years ago and several others
that I know have also done it that way. Where do you plan on crossing
the border?

The vessel is either a South Coast 21' or 22'. There is no motor on it
right now, nor will there be until after I cross the border. As far as I
can see South Coast SeaCraft went under in 1981 so all craft should be older
than 15 years (no need to register with RIV.ca). I will have a bill of sale
but it will be VERY low. Probably $100 for the vessel and $100 for the
trailer. Will this cause a problem?

I will be most likely crossing the border in Southern Ontario.

Thanks,
Steve.

Seems to me there may be a problem with trailer registration and plates.
Googlegroups this group or rec.boats.cruising on this subject for
information as this has been covered in this or that group recently.

was sailing yesterday and I'm going again today.

afternoon with gusts to 25 in the channels. Southwest winds 15 tonight
increasing to southwest 20 to 25 with gusts to 30 in the channels Sunday.
Sunny with cloudy periods today. Cloudy periods tonight. Cloudy with sunny
periods Sunday with chance of late day showers. Visibility good. High today
28. Low tonight 17. High Sunday 28.

Step right up, questions answered, no charge. Keep in touch.

As far as I can tell from many calls to both borders, there isn't. Trailer
is registered, plated, and titled. Both the boat and the trailer were
manufactured in 1973.

Looks like I just pay taxes on bill of sale and that's it.

Steve.

Ken,

I've been in the throes of modifying a tractor-trailer rig I bought this
Spring ever since our last.

I plan to finish it up in time to haul the boat up this Fall.

We're goin' to have to get together on the Lakes Bras d'Or next year !

Cordially,

Courtney
