Archived from groups: rec>boats>racing (more info?)

Hello,
I bought a space sailer 22 last week (for those that don't know this
is a 22 foot masthead fibreglass keelboat). I am looking to set the
boat up for racing but the previous few owners of the boat did not
race her so some of the fittings have disappered.

The main thing that was missing in terms of racing were the spinnaker
blocks on the gunwale near the stern (the blocks the spinnaker sheets
turn through before leaving to the pole and spinnaker). There were
however stainless steel saddles on each gunwale. These appear to be
through bolted with washers on the underside but no backing plate.

What I would like to know is if these saddles would be up to the job
of supporting the spinnaker sheet loads (I don't know for sure if that
is what they intended for originally)??

Assuming they were installed correctly would they be ok without a
backing plate??

Being new to owning a boat (I have sailed for years but never done
much maintenance) I want to make sure I am doing the right thing
before using them with the spinnnaker.

Thanks,
Tim

Excellent questions.
without knowing the boat's construction specifications etc, it is impossible
to conclusively answer the question but....It is highly probable that you
don't need backup plates because you have washers under the deck. Do the
fittings look corroded? perhaps you should change the fittings and fasteners
and then add some blocks and try it out.
I am currently using Harken#168 for my spin blocks. They have been back
there for about 10 years and look faded but work like they are brand new.
The boat is a Sonar, 2100lb.

good luck.

The sort of loads the small kites a space sailer 22 carries washers should
be sufficient.
All spaceys are over built for the size of the boat they are and do not
carry a large amount of sail area

You must be from Perth, I'm suprised someone actually knows what they are...

By saddles do you mean pad eyes? The best blocks to use for spinnaker control
are Harken ratchet blocks. They come in port and stb so the button/switch is
always facing up. They will allow the trimmer to trim without using a winch in
all but heavy air.

Even better, are the new carbo ratchamatic blocks. There's no switch;
the ratchet engages whenever there's more than a certain amount of
tension on the line (settable with a screw adjustment). Absolutely
magic. I've been using them for spin turning blocks on my J/24 for a
couple of years, and I'm thinking of replacing my jib blocks with them
too.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Sure am.
South of Perth YC is the place to go if you want to have a look at any other
spacey 22's, they have a pretty active fleet of them these days.
The Spacesailer range of boats were designed by Swarbrick, who is a WA
local, that is why no one else appears to know anything about them not many
were ever sold any where else, the 27's are the only model i have ever seen
interstate and they are usually for sale for ridiculous price tags.
