I have a 17ft 6inch Pilot dory with a 50HP Evinrude, need to fit an
auxiliiary motor.
I have longshaft Seagull which does not seem to move it at all.
Any suggestions of the best for standby motor??
Kind regards, Gordon. >> Stay informed about: What HP motor? |

Hi Gordon
I have a 16" 11" Orkney 520 (semi planer) which has an auxilliary of 4 HP
longshaft which is more than enough for this boat. Don't know your type but
in the region of 4 HP or seems right.

Hi
My 'main motor' packed up nearly 8 miles offshore recently. Boat: Seahog
Trooper. I set up the 5hp Johnson and got back in, took 2 hours, but at
least we were in. The GPS was showing speed over ground of 2.5 mph.
A small engine is the compromise between emergency, slow movement and
weight. Something like a 15 hp would be not much quicker, as the boat would
be nowhere near planing.

Thanks HTH, this is the problem of what size motor for emergency.
My Seagull would have left me at the mercy of the tides.
It's not that I want to get up on the plane, just enough power to get back
in a reasonable timeline.
Thanks for all suggestions.
Kind regards, Gordon.

Hi Gordon
If you want a bit of reserve power, I would suggest a 5 to 9hp outboard
The Pilot is not a light boat and I suspect that the Seagull make not have
enough grunt to push against the tides in your area.
The alternative is to change the Seagull prop to the larger 5 blade model,
whilst this would not make the boat go faster it would get you there come
what may.
Have a chat with this guy at <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.seagullparts.co.uk/index.html" target="_blank">http://www.seagullparts.co.uk/index.html</a> or
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.saving-old-seagulls.co.uk/" target="_blank">http://www.saving-old-seagulls.co.uk/</a> both are very knowledgeable about
Seagulls.
You can always sell the Seagull on EBay and buy a larger engine, watch out
for the maximum ratting on the auxiliary bracket however.
Good luck
Dave

I would use 8hp longshaft fourstroke this would give you about 5 to 6 knots.
The grunt of the fourstroke will give you the low down power you need.
