| With a handheld GPS, what happens when the batteries die, do you lose
all saved tracks and waypoints or is it automatically restored when you
put new batteries in???

I would recommend assuming you WILL lose them and writing them down. My GPS does
lose them if the batteries are dead for more than a couple of hours, keeps them
long enough to remove and replace.
But, what if the GPS dies, gets dropped or stolen? I generally run my equipment
(GPS, Computer, etc) on the basis of "when it dies, what will I need saved?"

That may indeed be brand & model specific. For example, my old (5 years?)
Magellan Tracker keeps them without problem while the batteries are out of
it during the 6 months I don't use it. But what Kent said about the
broken/lossed/stolen gps is indeed true and a good advice.

If the data is saved in volatile memory, then it is lost when power is
removed. However, most decent modern devices will try to maintain the data
by reserving some battery power.
If you have a PC link capability then use that to save and restore your
data.

As one reply noted, must be brand specific, my Lowrance handheld keeps its
routes and waypoints, so far for as long as a year.. It also has a generic
computer interface that allows me to save and restore them, as well as edit
them on the computer then upload them back to the GPS...

I think a lot of them use EEPROM chips not RAM chips, EEPROM's are not
'volatile.. Some may also use small lithium cells for mem retention.. It's
no different then a Nortel phone I have, pretty much normal everyday phone,
looses the date and time as soon as you pull the power pack, but will keep
the caller history and speed dial book for years..

I looked at the user manual and it doesn't tell how. But it does. Greg's answer
is better than anything I could say.

I have a Garmin eTrex Legend. When the batteries die, I just plug in some
new ones and keep going. It picks up right where it left off without missing
anything but the time for the battery change on the trip log. >> Stay informed about: INFO WANTED -GPS |
