I have been looking at "The Practical Mariner's Book" by John Vigor and
want to buy it for our blue water sailing kids in Juneau. My usual
source doesn't list that title, but does list "Practical Encyclopedia Of
Boating: An A-z Compendium Of Seamanship, Boat Maintenance, Navigation,
And Nautical Wisdom".

That sounds as though it is an upgrade/replacement for the PMB. I am
inclined to buy it, but would like to know if anyone has actually
compared the two.

Thank you,

Can't answer your specific question but I've never been impressed with
Vigor's books. Don't have one on my shelves.
Now if you want to buy something that may prove to be truly useful I would
suggest the 3rd edition of Nigel Calder's "Boat Owners Electrical and
Mechanical Manual".

I got the book and it is excellent. Turns out our son in law was down
here from Juneau. He's doing a gigantic amount of work on their blue
water Union, and was going through the book saying, "This is the answer
to that question. Here's another one..." and so on. Specific stuff.

I had thought to get the Vigor book for its amusement value, but now I
am giving him Calder for its proven worth.

Thank you so much for recommending it.

Your very welcome. I'm actually going to take my 1st edition of the Calder
book to a used bookstore to get a few dollars for it that I can put towards
the 3rd edition. This is probably the very best book available on boat
maintenance.
Calder's cruising manual is also a pretty good book.
Before I purchased my current C&C I looked at a Union 36 as I like the style
and this particular boat had a very attractive price. Unfortunately between
the cost of upgrades I would have done and the customs duty/taxes/money
exchange it became uneconomical to bring it into Canada from Washington.
Hope your son in law has good luck with his.
Cheers,
Gordon
