Advice please:

Our backstay is made from a piece of 6mm spliced spectra or dyneema with the
outer protective jacket removed.

This is on a fractionally rigged boat with very swept spreaders. It is
often highly loaded.

How often should I plan on replacing this line?

I worry that UV will reduce it's strength and we'll be sailing upwind one
day only to hear a loud 'thwap' followed by an unfortunate 'twang'

I doubt close-hauled will be any problem. You are probably just using
it to adjust mast bend up high. You can probably let it go slack and
find too much draft up top, but nothing else. The swept back shrounds
are keeping the mast up.

OTOH, if it has to support a big masthead chute, I would be very
concerned.

I would bet that you will never ever ever hear that sound on any day
sailing upwind.

I would NOT bet against your hearing that sound just after setting the
chute on a windy day however....

Best bet would be to check with the manufacturer of the line.. If this
backstay was made from the 6mm core of an 8 mm line, the core may have
had absolutely no additional UV protection incorporated into its
production. If the line was made to be stripped down, the core may
have been sprayed with extra UV coatings. Etc. etc. In the first
case, I would guess that 2 seasons would be pushing it, for Lake
Ontario... but one year if Miami or San Diego as the backstay gets
sun-blasted every day the mast is up...
