I have an older Mercruiser 888 (188 Hp - Ford 302). When I try to start it, the starter will not crank and the battery starts smoking! I am assuming that I have a dead short to ground. Even if I turn off the key the short stays on. The boat sat about 2 1/2 years without being run. I am assuming that the starter has a dead short. It may also be the remote relay that activates the starter. Anyone else have any ideas??? The starter will be a pig to pull off and I am tring to sell the boat!
