Can someone recommend a publication that, coupled with the appropriate
charts, will help me navigate this waterway. I plan to spend a week
vacationing on a houseboat in the 1000 Islands this summer. Thanks
for any suggestions.

Hello again Kevin ... an excellent choice Smile. About the charts ,,, charts
will (should) be provided to you by the renter ,,, along with hands on
training and words of wisdom on your locale. Charts are available at most
boat dealerships and chandlerys ... but they cost. If you were in Ottawa, I
would recommend vist the Chandlery ... here's their site fyi ...

Just a hint that was very useul to me first time out there ... buoys are
identified on the charts ... so if you're feeling lost, just pull up to one,
read off it's number, find it on the chart ... and there you are Smile. If you
go to the Chandlery site, click on chart #1310, then click on "click here
for area detail" for the big picture.

Hi Kevin,
Go to the site mentioned below
www.cruising.ca/thousand/f-index.html

Here you will find a lot of info about the 1000 Islands and their group of
islands, Lake Ontario/river; marina's, charts needed etc.
If more info needed email privately.
Have fun,--
c ya Wim

Hi Kevin

I boat out of Gananoque. The best assistance you can have is the
correct Charts, Ports Cruising Guide and a local boater who will let you
know where to go and where not to go. If you want to PM me I will give
you some tips. May even be worth a phone call.

You're a lucky guy SJD, the islands just off Gananoque are in my opinion the
best ... we always make it a point to anchor thereabouts for lunch and a
swim before heading back downstream, through the narrows, and over to the US
channel for some just looking around ... ok, that's it ... I am ready for
summer Smile

publication.
Cruising Guide;" Lake Ontario and the Thousand Islands".

It is an very valuable guide and will warn you about good and bad locations
and it approaches, pictorially!

I haven't traveled that area, but have always found "Ports" guides to be worth
their cost.

If you're not familiar with chart reading, you can't go wrong with taking CPS's
boating course (not the Boat Pro course that just gets you your card). I had my
wife take it about 3 years ago (I have many years of boating, chart reading, etc
under my belt and used to teach fishermen how to use Loran C) and it really
increased her comfort level on the water. As well the extra set of eyes/hands
were welcome when we did the 30,000 islands. It helps my peace of mind also, as
I know that if something happens to me, she can navigate hoem, or guide a rescue
craft in.
