I'm embarrassed to be asking this but the definition on dictionary.com
does not seem applicable to jetskis, so...What is "cavitation"? Is it
related to vibration?
Second: I have a '94 GTX that I bought new and have barely used, plus
a '97 GTX that I just got used (with a Shuttlecraft). (I just
acquired a family and the single jetski just doesn't fit our needs.)
There is a manual that covers 1989(?) to 1997, but then there is also
one that covers 1997 & 1998. Are there separate repair manuals and
service manuals and engine manuals?
I have seen the Clymer manuals and the Seloc manuals; the shop manuals
and the service manuals; and the CDs listed on eBAY.
I want to get whatever manuals make a complete set so that I can
diagnose and fix what I can. I'm very handy and don't shy away from
tricky stuff, but I have no experience with car repairs (since my 1979
Datsun) or other engine repairs.
Any help would be appreciated. If you think that my questions don't
belong here then I'll just slip in to the background again and lurk.

Cavitation means that cavities or bubbles are forming in the liquid that
we're pumping. These cavities form at the low pressure or suction side of
the pump, causing several things to happen all at once:
The cavities or bubbles will collapse when they pass into the higher regions
of pressure, causing noise, vibration, and damage to many of the components.
We experience a loss in capacity.
The pump can no longer build the same head (pressure)
The pump's efficiency drops.
On a Jetski, the means of Propulsion is a Jet Pump! It's sucking in Water
and Blasting it out the Back. When your having Cavitation problems, your
loosing performance on your Ski. The pump doesn't work as good as it should
and so your Speed on the Ski Decreases.
Personally for me, the Shop Manuals are the best. I have Original Shop
Manuals for my Jetski like like I do for my Harley. I work on my own stuff.
I've Rebuilt the Pump completely myself and replaced the Engine with a new
Rebuilt on my 97 1100 STX. Of course the Manuals usually are a little more
Advanced, they expect you to know the basic's. Some of the other manuals
are more beginner and dumb things down, but then leave a lot of other into
out. When I got my Jetski, I got the Service Manuals to go alone with it.
In my case I got the 1100ZXi Service Manual and the 1100STX Service Manual
Supplement. Everything I need to know for my ski is in those 2 Manuals.
Parts Brake down, to Wiring Diagrams, Specifications, Torque Specs. Pretty
much anything I want to know on my ski. Those other are more generic.
More then 1 ski in them, less info because it's trying to fit everyone and
everything into it and generally fails in the end. I'm also not a HUGE fan
of CD's I like the have the PAPER Manual right there when I'm working on
it. I don't want to have to go to a computer and find the info and maybe
print out pages of info I might need. Sometimes that is good. Say the
Auto Industry when you need AllData or whatever for current info, and
Trouble Shooting problems, but on a Jetski, a good Printed Service Manual is
really all you need.

Thank you for your response. That will really help a lot. The
closest dealership to my house is an hour away but it's not on the way
to any water. I don't get much chance to hang out and ask questions. >> Stay informed about: Newbie Questions: Cavitation and Manuals |
