Post subject: Noob questions on Yamaha purchase (and other Qs)
Archived from groups: rec>sport>jetski (more info?)

I'm close to purchasing a 2006 Yamaha (vx110) with a trailer and have a
couple of noob questions (so bare with me). I've never owned any type of
watercraft before, so I'm unsure as to the general amount of maintenance /
difficulty is involved.

*How many hours is too much? The guy I plan to purchase from has a couple of
skis, but they all have about 200 hours on them. He owns a rental place
which turns them over each year. But thats also why the price is so low I'm
guessing.

*I was told that there's a warranty on these until 2010. Is this
transferrable to me after purchase?

*Do I need to get seperate a seperate plate for the trailer it goes on? Its
a small trailer which fits only 1 jet ski. Also, do I only need to have
reflectors on the trailer, or do I actually need to wire the brake lights?
I'll be transporting this from NC to DC occasionally.

*Is winterizing the ski a difficult process?

*Are they hard to get on and off the trailer for frequent use? There's a
public ramp area which is rarely used in my area.

Sorry for the amateur questions, but I've only rented in the past and now
i'm hooked and want to own for myself. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I personally would not touch a rental ski, I also would think any sort
of commercial activity (like renting) would void any warranty. Some
are transferrable usually with a fee and some are not transferrable. I
sure as hell would not tell them it was a rental. As far as trailer
lights, yeah you need them. That is kind of a no brainer,

As far as getting on and off the trailer it should be a piece of cake,
and not even get your feet wet.

for my skis all I do to winterize them is turn them on and make put
stable in the gas tank, start it and make sure all the water is blown
out. I then take out the plugs and spray some engine fog in there,
throw the plugs back in and tighten. Lastly I remove the battery.

You may or may not need to do other stuff.

To give you an idea, my 2000 Ultra 150 has about 25 hours on
it............

Check that hull over. Look at the impeller. That thing better be darn
cheap!

Thanks for the info.

Good point about the warranty consideration, I'll probably call Yamaha
directly and look around a bit more.

The ski is $5K (2006 vx110 / 150-200hrs) and there are a couple to choose
from- I was also thinking I'd be getting a slightly better deal by getting
one before winter rolls in.

It's true that this is a good time of year to buy, but that sounds like
a high price for 200 hours. For an extra 2 grand or possibly less you
can buy a brand new one of the same model, even a better deal if you
can find a leftover '05 (although that might not be easy, those sold
very well). Not that 200 hours is a lot on one of these machines, many
have reported these models, Yamaha's 4-strokes including ones used as
rentals, having gotten up to 1500 and 2000 hours without needing any
rebuilds; but, as was pointed out, you know a rental has not been
babied, and that's too many hours for that asking price.

Yes you do need to register your trailer and put a license plate on it,
and you need to have working lights on it, at least here in NY (where
my rig currently violates that last law!).

I second the recommendation to avoid purchasing a rental ski. It's not just
engine hours, but abuse on the hull, and amount of time it's sat outside in
the sun.

That is way too much for a rental VX110 with that many hours. I bought a
Kawi 12-F rental ski with 590 hours on it for only $750. It needed a
little attention but I wanted a project and with an additional $400
invested in it, it runs great with many new parts I got cheap (pump,
impeller, fuel injectors, fuel filter) and a little elbow grease.

Depends on what state you are in. I'm in TN and last year we only
needed plates for taking it out of state, now this year we can take them
anywhere without plates. I would assume you need all the standard
trailer lights in working condition.
