Are you sure the guy put a "legal" version of WinXP Pro on you're machine?
If he didn't charge you for the new operating system, I'd be very
suspicious.

Just for fun sometime ago I downloaded and installed Open Office and it
seems to work quite well. Probably would suffice for all but the most
"sophisticated" of users.

What kind of machine was it you had repaired? Did it come preinstalled with
MS Office? If it didn't come with reinstall disks, they should be available
from the manufacturer, assuming it's a name brand.

a garage sale.

Apparently it's totally legal - I have no clue as to how it got there.

I do know when I powered it up, the MS UPDATE thingy came online and
next thing I know, I've got XP Pro.

I'm not complaining - same serial number as my Home.

No - it was a home built - just the mother board bios and boot disc.

1. There are or were "upgrade only" versions of XP Pro around that
upgraded XP Home. The serial number would remain the same. Computer
assemblers can buy bulk licenses for such upgrades from MS on the cheap,
typically in 100-license packs.

2. Losing and replacing a motherboard should not affect the programs and
data on a hard drive, though some settings might change or have to be
changed because of the hardware differences between the two motherboards.

3. Open Office is a freebie imitation of Microsoft Office.

4. The latest version of T'bird is evolutionary, not revolutionary. The
changes are minor and shouldn't be that upsetting to anyone.

Most programs make registry entries for various purposes.
Registration keys, for instance.
If the motherboard loss requires reinstalling XP, I believe most
programs have to be reinstalled. There is a repair utility for XP
reinstallation meant to carry over applications, but I've never used
it.
I have read of it failing for most who use it after replacing the
motherboard with a different model motherboard.
Most people seem to end up reinstalling every app when the MB fails.
Gives them a clean registry too.
Since I started Ghosting I've forgotten most of what I used to know
about XP installations. Last time I lost a MB I decided to just
reinstall everything to get a "clean" registry.
