I asked around and it was quickly obvious that it wasn't worth getting it
repaired, may as well buy another used engine or even a new one.

But what about doing it myself? Good idea or bad?
I am reasonably mechanically inclined, know enough to use a torque wrench,
etc.
Any suggestions where to find parts? (at least piston, rings, water pump)

Will most certainly need a new piston and ring pack.
Cylinder probably needs to be bored and honed.
Wrist pin may also be baked. Conrod too?
Will bottom end bearings be typically more resilient and possibly ok?
Will need water pump, thats what caused problem in the first place.

Although old in calendar years, this engine has seen very little use, so I
am reluctant to just toss it away.

What do you think?

Volvo AQ170 overheated now sputters - I have a Volvo 170AQ. It is an older model from the late 70's. Last week on the lake it over heated and started making a knocking noise. I took it home, replaced the impelller, but it idles real rough. Anyone have any idea what could be going on. A....

Merc 9.9 STILL not right - Well, I got my brand-new 9.9 4-stroke back from the Dealer yesterday. It was in because it was hard-starting (for a NEW motor), idled rough, and had a "lag" at about 1/3 throttle. Put it on the boat (12-ft aluminum skiff) and tried it out on th...

Merc 470 voltage - My 1982 Searay with a Merc 470 has been getting fluctuations in the volt meter on the helm. Below 1200 RPM it shows to be slightly discharging. But when I get higher RPM than that it overcharges. I haven't overhaeted the engine or anything to ruin the..

merc. 3.0 thermostat? - Hi, This might sound like a dumb question, but while changing the head gasket on my merc 3.0, I noticed that the thermostat was missing. My question is: why does a marine engine even have a thermostat? I can understand that in a car you want the coolant....

old merc, controls - What are the proper ways to start a 70's merc? This would include the use of the electric choke, the manual choke perhaps, and the cold start lever??? (small lever at the control unit)
