Post subject: Power Winch Question
Archived from groups: rec>sport>jetski (more info?)

I turned 40 last Friday and as a gift to the old guy, some of my family
bought me an electric winch for my birthday. They either got tired of
having to help me push it out of the water and up the sloped 75' of
beach where I lock it up. Or they got tired of watching me nearly kill
myself cranking it up by hand using the manual winch I have installed on
my locking post. Either way I do appreciate it.

The problem is they bought me a Superwinch 12volt ATV winch. Now it
looks like this would do the job for me but how could I power it? I
could use it connected to a battery but it would need to be recharged on
a regular basis. Would one of those solar chargers be enough to maintain
the battery at full charge for "once a day" use and would that battery
be able to provide enought current to wind in the 75'+ of cable?

Or should I break down and just exchange it for an AC model of
Superwinch? The problem with this scenario is that the closest 110VAC is
up a 45 deg. 75' bank and then another 40' into the cottage. But that
could be resolved with an extension cord.

I know this really isn't directly "jetski" related but I figure a few of
you here may have installed something similar.

TIA.

Chris

Chris,

Some of the better (read that more expensive) solar chargers would
probably keep up with the drain (assuming nice sunny days) of once a day
use, especially if you were using a deep cycle marine battery to power
the winch. The battery will actually probably run the winch for several
weeks without a charger before it starts to lose power and then you
could just haul it up to the cottage and put it on a 75amp automotive
charger to bring it back up.
