Looks like I'm not gonna get another season out of my old 4bbl. Started it
up in the laneway, it did the not gonna idle thing it would do on occasion
last season, and when I shut down, gasoline was leaking out both sides of
the carb onto the manifold. So ... any suggestions as to sources of rebuilt
4bbl carbs in Canada?

Non-newsgroup replies to rikk.TakeThisOut@rogers.com , thanks.

Just get the kit and rebuild it yourself, this is not a rocket science.
Looks complicated on a drawing but in real life is quite simple.
Many marinas have a guy who can rebuild the carb. Just call a few. Cost ca.
$ 250 (carb kit is about 80 tax incl.). Plenty of sources in US (internet).

I wouldn't jump on the rebuilding too quick.

Better to get a "new" re-built from a dealer or other source.

I had a very bad experience last year. New to me older boat which ran great
for 2 months and then got real hard to start because of flooding.

Long story, short, it turned out to be the 4 bbl carb. I tried to get a new
one but could not find a match. One parts dealer had a rebuild kit so I
bought it and turned it over to a "pro" to rebuild. He was late delivering
it and when I got it couriered to me it was bouncing around loose in an
oversized box. Installed it, and it started but would not get full power and
the smell of gas was frightening.

Pulled it off. Found a replacement. Bought it (same price as rebuild kit +
labour to idiot rebuilder). Bolted it on and it works great now.

Save yourself some grief. Get something you can take back and say "this
doesn't work - give me my money back!"

My little experience cost me about $3000 in total, between carb, labour,
trips to town (3 hours each way - half of it over a gravel road!) and loss
of several charters I had to pass on to other guides.

Good luck,

Well ... the thing is ... the situation remedied itself next day as it
always has in the past ... runs smooth on idle, primaries, secondaries,
power, etc.

So my conclusion is a sticking float or maybe some foreign particle(s) in
the inlet needle/seat.

For now, I'm going to install a shutoff valve in front of the fuel pump so
that if it happens again, I can close the valve, burn off the fuel in the
bowl, turn the valve on again and hopefully the fuel coming in will either
wash away any particle that may be lodged in the seat or free the float ...
we'll see.

And if I do get around to removing the air horn and taking a peek I'll give
the inlet needle and seat a close look for wear ... cost to replace $11.00
.... and check out the float and level setting ... cost about $23.00 ... and
pick up an air horn gasket ... cost tbd ... or maybe I can make one using
the old one as a pattern. So that's the plan.

Imo, it would be a waste of time and money to rebuild the carb since the
problem is definitely float/inlet needle seat related. Geez ... imagine
spending $250 ??? for a kit, then having the same problem re-occur due to
say foreign objects in the fuel line. I did install an inline filter last
season, maybe I'll just check the quality ... although it's not likely
anything is getting through it to cause problems.

Conclusion ... a sticking float.
Solution ... shut off valve and hammer ... gentle taps only.

Then there's the "tap the carb with the hammer" to free a stuck float ...
not .

Carb Cleaner is most likely all you need..
Just like the old days....start your boat...rev it and spray the cleaner in
the carb and just make sure you don't let it stall as it will be difficult
to get restarted....
If you do this you should be fine..
Cheers and happy boating.>
Oh...
and this is about 10bucks at Cdn Tire.
