Post subject: Repair Question/Opinion wanted
Archived from groups: rec>sport>jetski (more info?)

I just had the pump support (the sleave around the impeller) replaced
on my 97 XP. To make a long story short, I wanted some opinions on
the repair. First of all, I was charged for 4.5 hours of labor to
replace the piece. Does this seem like a reasonable amount of time
for the repair?

Upon inspection of the repair, there is a lot of sealant that has
oozed out from between the support and the hull it self. There are
dried drips about 1/2 inch long all the way around the seam between
the support and the hull. Will this excess sealant work itself off
with use, or should I trim it myself?

And for the trifecta, would the jetski need to be removed from the
trailer to make this repair? I noticed scatches in the hull, but am
unsure of how they got there and am in the process of putting two and
two together.

I will be meeting with the repair shops manager to discuss the above
along with the damage to our trailer and the fact that the jetski was
absolutely filthy when we picked it up.

No 4.5 Hours is probably right.
2 hours is about the max cap I have seen most dealers charge for a regualr prop
change so a pump suport would easily take twice the time.

Does sound like the work was sloppy. The prop can be changed on a trailer but
it isnt the most comfortable spot so I imagine the same applies to a pump
suport. It would have to be pulled slightly off the trailer, but it could be
done.

Joe,
Do you realize that in order to properly replace the pump support, the
driveline needs to be removed and an alignment tool inserted ? Sometimes
that support plate must be installed and removed several times to get the
shims under it so that the pump aligns with the engine. Sometimes that is
impossible without re-shimming the engine.

Know your facts before you jump on the mechanic....

I once paid a mechanic for about 6 hrs, only to collect money for the two
hours that I had bid the support plate job at. It works both ways......... I
now charge that job on a time and material basis only, as sometimes it
takes much longer than expected. We are dealing with a fiberglass hull,
which can vary greatly between different skis, even of the same model.

Yes, trim off the excess materials. Yes, it can be done on the trailer. They
should not have let it out of their shop that way. As far a a dirty ski
goes, you should see the filth that I have to work around with some of these
skis when they arrive at the shop. I would be embarrassed to ask someone to
work on my ski if it looks like some of the skis we take into our shop.
