Sailing Lessons in Vancouver?

Are you interesting in sailing (dinghies) or cruising (keelboats)?

Actually, I didn't realize it was that sharply divided. I think I'm
interested in both. I did some more research on the CYA website, and
looked at a bunch of the schools in the links you sent. I think I
would be interested in Basic Cruising and LTS White 1-3. Does that
sound like a good place to start? Which would you suggest I do first?

Many of the schools have 5 day cruises for Basic Cruising. Would you
recommend that, or the individual days?

Do I need to get a PCOC also?

Since I'm from the US, do you know if these certifications will be
accepted in the US?

Obviously, both the Cruising and Dinghy (LTS) programs teach the
principles of sailing - however, the LTS program is aimed at dinghy
racing, and expects you to capsize and recover the boat. It is
unlikely to cover chart reading, and other things of interest to
cruisers.

The Cruising program will cover chart reading, rules of the road,
anchoring, reefing, and other topics not needed for dinghy racing. I
haven't taught the CYA cruising program since the PCOC was introduced,
but I'd expect that the PCOC would be included in the Basic Cruising
course, but not in the LTS program

I've taught a few 3 day "Basic Cruise and Learn"s (but 15 years ago!).
On the Cruise and Learn trips you get some experience with living
aboard, and visiting "foreign" marinas, etc., that you won't get in a
local lecture and daysail program.

Depends entirely on who you expect to "accept" it. I expect most
charter operators will just want to see some evidence of previous
sailing experience, regardless of the source. (I think one of the
American cruising programs was based on CYA's...)

On the PCOC:

The safe boating guide appears a little unclear:

Applies to non-residents of Canada and whose pleasure craft is in
Canada more than 45 consecutive days. Operator card or equivalent
issued to a non-resident by their state or country will be considered
as proof of competency.


I would expect the that PCOC is a part of the Basic Cruise and Learn.
I know we provide the exam as a matter of course.
