We just got off a five day trip on the Rogue River in Oregon. There
was a group of scouts and their leaders who had rented 5 rafts and
were paralleling us for much of that time. As far as I can tell, they
did not have any type of guide but there were several experienced
leaders. They apparently didn't know the river. We showed them how
to get through Blossom Bar and they were pretty tenative about several
of the other rapids as well. My impression is that they were just
being justifiably cautious on a new (and potetentially
dangerous)river.
They seemed to be having the time of thier lives. They arrivged at
the bottom of Blossom at the same time as a huge jet boat arrived.
They started squirting the jet boat passengers so the jet boat turned
its stern to them and drenched them. They repeated the same process a
few minutes later with another jet boat.
I am sure you will do well. 13 - 14 year olds are pretty hardy. I
would expect this to be a great trip. Just be sure that they take the
river seriously. I am sure that the outfitter will make sure that
they do that.
Good luck to you.
