Is this a new product? I just saw it advertised in AWA magazine.
The Shred Ready Standard Helmet comes with removeable earpiece for $70
or with removeable facemask for $100.

Weight of helmet(s) is not stated on the Shredready.com website.
Hopefully it's not as heavy as a hockey helmet.

My Protec seems to work well, judging by the half dozen hits I've had,
but I don't like the holes in the top when it's raining or hailing.
So far I haven't been able to justify > $150 for a designer helmet.

Hi Bill -- Is Protec a hockey helmet? -- If so, maybe can take more than
one hit and still be safe? -- Shred Ready seems great! -- Take care -- Al K

No, Protec is originally a skateboarding helmet, I believe. It's the kind
that makes any kayaker look like a throwback to the last century:

http://www.nrsweb.com/shop/product.asp?pfid=2030&deptid=1768

It is very lightweight, and has ear coverage, which I find indispensable.
One problem is that during an Eskimo roll, for some people, it moves up
and exposes the forehead. OTOH I see many Olympic freestyle skiiers and
snowboarders wearing it, or the sidecut model:

http://www.nrsweb.com/shop/product.asp?pfid=2038&deptid=1768

Shred Ready Standard Helmets won't be available until early 2008, I read.

That is not a small problem. We had to evacuate my son several years ago on
the Nolichucky after he banged his forehead wearing a Protec helmet rolling
in Quarter Mile. He required a few stitches and had quite a knot. After a
bit of research, I replaced all of the helmets in the family with Cascade
helmets. They have a strap system that can be adjusted so the helmet stays
where it should. These helmets are not expensive and offer much better
protection than the Protec.

The Standard is a new helmet that comes in three versions: Half Cut,
Full coverage, and full face. All three versions are based on the
same shell. For full coverage we have ear covers, and for full face
we add a facemask. The ear covers or facemask is not removable.
Priced at 69.95 for the half and full , and 100 for the full face.
The shell and ear covers injection molded ABS witha molded EPP liner.
Ear covers have compression molded foam pads, and face mask has
compression molded cheek pads and mouth pads.

prelim estimates of weights based off our CAD files show the half cut
to be 473 grams, full cut 509 grams and Full face around 600-625
grams.
I think the half cut is the lightest helmet i have weighed from a lot,
but certainly not all helmets on the market.

Let me know i fyou have any questions

If you look at the strap design of the pro-tec full cut versus the pro-tec
ace, you'll notice that the strap design changed. The full cut is a
single point of attachment on each side (although it looks like they added
a nape strap), where as the ace uses two points that merge into one
strap using a plastic slide. Numerous (innumerable?) helmets use the
same design

I suspect this effectively allows the wearer to reposition the pivot point
to somewhere less likely to allow rotation. Given that paddlers come with
a dizzying array of head shapes, the adjustable part is kind of useful.

I like the cascade helmets for go-bank-your-head-on-a-rock days, but they
don't meet Bill's rain protection requirement.

Does that mean duct tape isn't fashionable kayaking equipment anymore?

Tom,

What is the sizing like. My husband has a large head, currently wears a
ProTec with the XL liner which barely works for him. He would like
something else but hasn't found anything with the full coverage that fits
well.

Thanks

Carol

Such as the WRSI helmet, www.whitewaterhelmet.com is their website.
I know several people, including Jeremy, who really love their WRSI.
Not for me though, as I've hit my ears twice on rocks while flipping.

ProTec Ace does not have ear protection. Those two straps you mention
perhaps do nothing more than substitute for the full-cut's ear piece.
The only person I know who wears Protec Ace positions it way up on his head,
affording very poor protection IMO.

Exactly, although the Cascade helmet is both affordable and well-designed.
I think it looks great with facemask, less so without.

Good idea! Next time there's a hailstorm, I'll be prepared.
