Why do you think he is "insane"?
Is it because he is following his dream, a goal he set for himself ?
Could it be that you hate the fact that he is able to cast off on a
voyage of discovery, that he is living his dream, and you are not?
Like Wilbur I suspect you will never do anything for fear of
failure.
This young man will helm his vessel with hope in his mind, leaving
fear in his wake.
Security at sea, is denial of life to a sailor.

They think differently if you're flying a USA flag, and they've got
guns.
As to the other, well, I'd rather bump into a small, slow moving,
plastic boat that wasn't keeping a proper watch than a huge, fast
moving, steel one. I much prefer sailing with two and am obsessive
about watch keeping. Still, I don't think he's putting anyone in
danger save himself. I wish him well.

Great speech. Hope it's enough for his parents if he dies before he is
really old enough to make life and death decisions.. it's called
parenting, and the fact that you attack shows you have little balance
here, but nice speech anyway;) >> Stay informed about: Solo Circumnavigation |

He'll fail. I doubt he manages even a single ocean crossing. As for actually
completing a circumnavigation; there ain't a snowball's chance of hell of
that ever happening. When will they ever learn that a circumnavigation is
not something to trifle with?

Just like the poor guy and his son sitting in their living room watching
TV when a car comes crashing through the wall and kills them both. I
guess you could blame it on bad parenting because the father let the kid
watch TV. >> Stay informed about: Solo Circumnavigation |

Donna Lange did it with less boat and less experience. Of course, she was a
woman. I noticed during the time I was involved with sail training vessels
and their approximately 50 / 50 mix of sexes that women generally respond
better to the challenges of the sea. When not crew under the thumb of a man
doing his hero thing, I think they are better sailors at the same experience
level more often than not.
They also make better pilots. I'm always glad to see that swell under the
white shirts in the cockpit when I fly commercial (usually can't see the
faces from the jetway:)
I've also noticed that men with a combination of boastful bragging about
their abilities and disdain for the other gender are usually suffering from
a deep seated insecurity that is a pretty accurate reflection of their own
actual ability.

Hrmmmmph! And I was about to chime in on another thread and compliment you
on your knowledge of lines. Right hand lay should be coiled counter
clockwise and vice versa. All us real seamen know that.

Great book... she also just revisited her Pacific crossing with her two
sons... 21 years later. Just read it in Cruising World.

Tania cheated. Her's is an unofficial record. She had help on a couple
occasions from her boyfriend who sailed along with her for about 1/4 the
voyage.
