I have not used my superjet this year....I've been painting it and working
on the engine. I've been using my 3 seater. It seems that the NC wildlife
patrol is really busting our chops this season. They pull us (all jet
skiers) over as often as possible, "just to check the fire extinguisher".
My problem is with my superjet, the fire extinguisher is under the hood. I'm
trying to figure out if I have the right to ride to shore before I raise my
handle pole and open the hood. Doing this in deep water will surely fill my
engine compartment with water. Especially when a boat fly's by creating a
wake close to another vessel......Oh yeah, boats can do that.
Anyway, if anyone knows the law on that please let me know.

Here in TN it's happening too, but at least in our case ALL boaters
are being stopped and ticketed and PWC's don't seem to be singled out.
It's a revenue enhancement thing here. Our state budget has had to be
cut, and TWRA is looking to replace that lost revenue by ticketing for
any and all infractions, no matter how slight. The last several years,
you would go weeks without seeing any enforcement officers on the
water. Now there are 4 or 5 diffrent patrols and usually two within
sight at any time. And buddy, they are looking to ticket you when they
pull you over. I actually got stopped on my houseboat two weeks ago to
check fire extiguishers, registration, lifejackets, and even made sure
my horn worked! Almost everyone on my dock has been stopped already
this year, and many have been ticketed for very small infractions. The
guy with the boat next to me had gone over to the gas dock to fill up
his inflatable, and got ticketed on the way back because the
lifejacket he had in the boat wasn't big enough to fit him. Crap like
that is what we will be dealing with as bloated state agencies try to
continue to justify not only their existence, but their bloated size.
Those budgets have to be met somehow, and if it's extracting $162.50
out of you for your lifejacket being too small, then you WILL respect
their authority and pay your fine, serf! Got it? Now, may I please see
your papers?

Jason, I can tell you from experience that yes you do have the right to
go to shore. When they motion for you to stop, point to the shore and
go directly to shore and stop. Sounds as though you may have a noob
officer trying to impress his supervisors. I had a similar experience with
a NC Wildlife Enforcement Officer here in Raleigh...he has since been
relieved of his duties with NC. If you feel you are being targeted,
document the incident and make sure that if it is the same officer you note
that as well. Next time he stops you inform him that he has stopped you
repeatedly and that you intend on filing a complaint with his supervisors if
he continues to stop you each time he sees you on the water. He does have
the right to stop any boat for a safety inspection at any time so don't get
upset. Act reasonable, professional and courteous and you will come out
on top. And if it is really obvious that he is only targeting PWC, then get
a friend with a boat and follow him around and document each and every
"inspection" he makes. If it appears he is being overly prejudicial towards
PWC, then you have a legitimate complaint and proceed from there.
Personally...I'd make an example of him and make it a very public issue.
If you can prove it, the media will jump on it immediately and if you prevail,
you will have scored big for PWCing. However, if you fail...that'd be bad
for PWCing so make sure you are right before you start your crusade.

I'm sure if you do it real slow and explain while your doing it they would
understand, this harrassment by fish and game is nation wide, at lake mead
its a given, they think by irritating the public it will save lives, they
can't or won't tell the difference between a bunch of water drinking safe
helmet wearing buoy riders and drunk, full beer and cocktails ice chest
carrying fisherman and rec people

We get the same thing here in MI
I go to Woodland lake almost every other weekend in the summer
and the ranger is always pulling over PWC and NOT boats.
One after the other all afternoon long and it never changes.
Last year was the worst ever, on a sunday afternoon, he had pulled over
over 20 PWC and not one single boat. Of the 20 that we counted, 8 were
issued citations.

I thought that I did have that right. I would love to find out the code or

Sounds like you've been going to Falls Lake. I've never been stopped
at Jordan, Gaston or Kerr. But we've been "checked" numerous times at
Falls and got a warning ticket last year because when I came up to a
no-wake zone bridge, I did a 360 a good 20 yards from the pylon and he
said some of my spray went into the no-wake zone. Yet, big ass boats
come off plane right at the pylon pushing a tidal wave into the zone
and they don't say a thing. They always hide in the cove by the Six
Forks bridge with bino's.

My stepson got pulled over on Ausable River west of Oscoda, MI on his
HX. After inspection the tree PIG proceded to hammer his throttle and
swamp the HX. He had to be begged to tow the flooded boat to shore by
the kids friends who had to chase him down on their skis. We tried to
file complaints but it all fell on deaf ears. >> Stay informed about: SuperJet vs. NC WildLife Patrol |

Yea, that crowd at Falls Lake is something else. Here's a couple of
tips....
Always try to look past the bridge and figure out what side he's on. When
you come through the bridge, make sure you looking at a really interesting
(fish, boat, girl, whatever) on the opposite bank. Keep your gaze there
until you're past him. Seems that they aren't so much into coming after you
but they'll wave you over if you look at them.
Keep in mind that all the Park Rangers (the uniforms on the ground) and
Wildlife Officers (the ones on the water) are all local P.D. and H.P.
washouts. They couldn't cut it as anything else so they had to do this.
They're going to have some seriously bad attitudes as a result. Seems like
the Park Rangers are the worst.
Holiday weekends are horrible. They will stop you without provocation.
They're working the holiday weekend, hating it, and they're going to make
someone else hate it too. You, if you're nearby.
We used to go camping up at Falls a few times a summer but the Park Rangers
got to be so much hassle we started going up to Gaston instead. Once were
getting dinner ready on our first night and I had pulled my trailer in front
of our "spot." A ranger came over and said I had to move it because "one
wheel was touching the pavement." Okaaaaaaayyyyy. I'm sure this is a huge
problem. Anyway, he said we could wait until after dinner. About two
minutes later, ANOTHER ranger came by and said I had to move it. When I
told him we already talked to another ranger and he said we could wait until
after dinner he got all pissy and said either I moved it NOW or he was going
to evict all of us from the campsite. When I still protested he backed up a
step and put his hand on his gun and them removed it very quickly. No
kidding. I actually started laughing and asked him if he just put his hand
on his gun. He tried to deny it and then backpedaled with "well, I don't
KNOW you..." I laughed even more and said "Dude, I'm standing here in a
bathing suit, no shirt and no shoes. Where do you think I'm hiding it?" He
got all agitated and even more pissy so I said I wouldn't discuss the
situation further without his supervisor present. He REALLY got pissy then
saying he "wasn't available" and all that. So I just got my cell phone and
called the wildlife office myself. His supervisor came over, was totally
cool, we ate dinner, and then I moved the trailer. No shots were fired.
I have a few more Park Ranger stories if you're still interested...

Charles,
I know what you are talking about. When we were camping there over
Memorial Day, We had a trailer tire on the grass and not on the
campsite. The ranger told us to get it off the grass and we said ok.
We didn't get two steps and the next ranger rides thru and tell us to
move it over. I'm like you and usually go up to Gaston. I just can't
get over those guys at Falls, they are there not to serve but to
harass.
