He was talking about braid. When was the last time anyone here saw a right
hand lay line?

How long must you shelter and muzzel your kids dreams before you can
be called a good parent?
Wait until they rebel against you and do it without your help and
blessings?

Maybe his parents want him to be successful
Success is a journey, not a destination.
The doing is often more important than the outcome.

I don't know if this kid is rich but "BJ" Caldwell who held the record
for like a fortnight in the 90's was no rich kid. He financed the
whole thing on a scarily thin budget through the fruits of his own
labor. The thing that always amazed me was that he wanted to do it so
badly. I've raced with BJ and against him and he seems like a
rational enough guy but... Yeah, I'd sail solo around the world if I
got a serious pay check out of it, but what's so fun about being
lonely and in peril that anyone would want to dedicate years and money
to it?

This morning when I coiled my anchor rode on deck to dry . . . 9/16"
twisted nylon and 3/8" stainless steel chain.

The CG has no jurisdiction outside the 200nm zone I think Wink
Most of those single-handed types just get lucky. A few disappear
without a trace though. I guess that one part of getting lucky is
carrying a good radar reflector and encountering freighter crews that do
keep that 24h sharp lookout...

He is probably safer than if he was driving to work 10 miles each day!
Plus, it is his life to do with as he pleases.

In 1999, Jesse Martin sailed around the world solo and unassisted. In
a 34-foot yacht named Lionheart, the 17-year-old Australian used no
fossil fuels, received no supplies or visitors, and never stepped off
the boat for the entire 10-month trip.

You'll have to keep up with it yourself.

I'm not involved nor do I know anyone involved. I just saw an
interesting story and relayed it along.

Take care,

Oh right. I was thinking of cable laid. Not much of that on modern yachts.

I've heard several times that the youngest person from Maine to command a
square rig ship around Cape Horn to California was only 16 or 17. It was a
small ship but he would have had to manage the crew as well as the
navigation.

If you look at the web site, you'll see that this kid has more experience
than many of the people in this newsgroup. The lack of judgement inherrent
to the age should be the only thing working against him but that could get
him killed in a car a lot quicker. Plenty of adults show poor judgement on
the water as well as in places like the White House.

He shoiuld have as good a chance as most who tackle this voyage.

The thing about the rudder "crumbling in the hands" of the person working on
it shortly before departure and its needing to be rebuilt did give me pause
though...

Please! He's a sailor by choice, and has been for many years.

If everyone followed your advice then anyone under 18 should not
play football, roller skate, ski, surf, drive cars, or even cross the
street.

Being that this family has been in the marine industry for all of
Zac's life I think his parents can judge his ability better than any
social services group or you.

We have a couple of kids every year around here drop dead playing
football. Are you saying the parents of these kids should go to jail
for child endangerment, or even murder?
