The Islander series is a slightly better built boat than a Catalina. It's
not considered a blue water voyager. It's a poor choice of vessels for a
circumnavigation.

Check out his blog. He spent the first night at Catalina Island to
organize. He has two radars with alarms and AIS. It looks like he is
doing this trip as sensibly as single handing can be done.

hi roger
Spoken like a true technowus. Why would anyone want TWO radar systems
on a boat that size???
Roger, what do you do in your space time?? O, yes.... install stuff

I rest my case.

I wan't necessarily intending to advocate dual radars but pointing out that
this kid and his parents were leaning towards the opposite end of the
spectrum that some here were accusing them of.

I'm always amused to be accused of being called a technowus and complexity
maven when I probably have one of the simplest and most basic boats in this
group. I do have an interesting fuel system for some good and specific
reasons but everything else is about as simple as it gets. No
refrigeration, Internet, Navnet, radar, sat phone, AC, stereo, or TV. Just
a handheld GPS (and another for backup), paper charts, and compass.

Well, there's a juicy piece of bait for trolling in this group.

I have a wheel, primarily because it came with the boat as far as decision
making at the time of purchase is concerned. Nothing beats a tiller when
you really want to focus on the feel and performance of the boat and there
isn't anything that can go wrong with it.

However:

The very short cable run and overhaul the winter before last makes my wheel
almost as sensitive as a tiller. I can even feel the tip vortex eddies
coming off the keel on a close reach. The best view of the jib tell tales
and sometimes the driest place to place to sit is to leeward. The wheel is
just as easy to use braced down in that comfortable position as it is
sitting to windward. Pushing on a tiller is no fun. Sure, you can rig up
rope and blocks and sail with those but it's just more cockpit clutter.

Speaking of ropes and blocks, the wheel steering puts all connections for my
self steering gear below deck, further reducing cockpit clutter. I don't
steer a lot now anyway since I got the Cape Horn gear. When I am steering,
another nice thing about the wheel for someone with wrists prone to
repeditive stress injury is the variety of grips that can be used. I can
push on the top, pull on the bottom. Constant shifting of my steering
methods helps when I'm doing the steering. I don't steer a lot now anyway
since I got the Cape Horn gear.

Having spent a lot of time on larger sailing vessels, I just like the feel
of standing at a wheel when sailing the boat hard. It also lets me carry
1 - 2 more people in the cockpit on daysails with guests. I can reach the
wheel brake from almost any part of the cockpit and it's much less of an
obstruction than lines running across to secure a tiller.

You would have to pry my wheel from my cold, dead fingers.

Thanks. If there is no exaggeration in his resume then he already has
sailed the equivalent of ~1/2 his trip. I won't say that qualifies him
because I probably have driven enough miles to go to the moon and back
but that doesn't make me an astronaut! It would mean he has seen just
about everything that can go wrong go south.

Reading his most recent blog entry gives me pause. Apparently pressure
for the record => no real shakedown cruise. The first leg *IS* his
shakedown cruise! Sheesh! A record is not that important.

He's got the boat, he's paid some dues, things in play are luck and
will. I've spent a lot of time alone in the wilderness to see if I can
handle it. I can but it takes me about a week before I go through the
wall. IMO: His tests will be that first week alone and going back into
it after his first port of call.

Nice troll! Wheel here.. came with the boat, but I like it a lot. Very tight
and sensitive to what's going on. I check the cables/quadrant periodically.
All seems fine so far. Also, I have the emerg. tiller available, not buried
under garbage.
