Can any of you help me locate a source for a KR12-40 fuel pump and
GulfCoast Filters? The KR12-40 was the fuel pump highly recommended
by Belgoes Filtration. Belgoes still has a web site at
www.fuelpolishing.com but apparently the company has ceased to exist.
On their web site they do not tell who manufactures the KR12-40.

I did a Google search and only turned up links back to Belgoes. I
have also searched under fuel polishing and fuel pumps without
success. I also was searching for GulfCoast filters and could not
find any link there either.

At the West Marine site I found a Jabsco Vane Puppy pump that is
touted as a fuel transfer pump. At 5 gallons per minute that is 330
per hour whereas the KR12-40 was only 40 per hour. What do you think,
would the Vane Puppy be sucking fuel through the filters too fast for
effective polishing?

Any advice and sources for equipment for fuel polishing would be much
appreciated.

The Belgoes site also talks about Walbro pumps, although they don't
explicitly say that the KR12-40 is from them. <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.walbro.com" target="_blank">www.walbro.com</a> doesn't
seem to be complete, and I couldn't find a KR12-40 pump there. It might
be worth a phone call to them for some help:

I'd expect that the filters you choose will have a rated flow for
specified filtration. Too high a rate probably means too high a pressure
that will activate a bypass (if fitted) or damage the filter medium; in
either case the filter becomes an expensive piece of pipe. <grin>

Good luck.

When I built the polishing system on Slacker I used a Stewart Warner Pump. I
dont remember the modle but it was made specificaly for diesel. About $100.00
from SanDiego Marine Exchange. It is very similar to the Walbro, and is rated
for 60 gph.

This sounds more like a sales brochures type request, than the answer
from a workshop type mechanic.

But -
Pump speed is usually a factor of its type, - gears, diaphragm etc
volts 12v or 24v or mechanical - also working head - If your into
transferring fuels then you want volume. Some are self priming, some
arnt.
But they come dime a dozen, as do filters.
Obviously you should work out your consumption rate.
If your a reasonable mechanic type -
Look up Auto electrical catalogs, or go and scrounge around, car truck
dismantlers - I have used second hand aircraft -( sophisticated gears
- for high speed) - to car and truck Mercedes and Jap - and various
assorted electrical pumps - As well as filters, there are water type
filters and dirt filters, all with different merits, ease of replacing
etc. - all very simple things of no great complexity, stuck on just
about every kind of motor, and a fact of life.

Do you have auto supply place handy?
They should have pages full of them.
So 12 volt 24 volt - is car or truck.
Or mechanical ?

While -
Fuel transfer is moving fuels from one tank to another - as in
transfer - So if you want to down load a few 1000 gallons this is the
one you want - but hardly the one to feed an engine with.

If you go the truck, wreckers route - buy a reconditioning kit, and
give it an overhaul - they are all very simple, non-wear-out-able
just a thing which spins around. - So the life span, usually sees out
the engine -
The vane type is better for intermittent use rather than long term -
Do you really want a thing like that spinning around for hours on end

****Contact Walbro, ask them for a local distributor.

**** For recirculation filtration the FASTER the flow through the filter
(not lower retention rating) is BETTER.
Vane Puppy's impeller is not chemically compatible with fuel oil. Diesel
oil will make the vane swell on long term service - the vane will stall
and the motor will seize. Choose ONLY a pump that has a EPDM
(EthylenePropyleneDiamineMonomer) impeller and seals.

  >Any advice and sources for equipment for fuel polishing would be much

**** Gulf Coast Filters - ancient technology, crappy products.
Stay away from filters that use toilet paper and rolls of paper towels -
are snake oil. Toilet paper, etc. will digest in the presence of water
emulsion or free water. These filters will UNLOAD debris under
increasing operating differential pressure. The 'sealing' method for
toilet paper and paper towel rolls is by using a compression cup or
knife edge seal that 'bites' into the end of roll - these filters bypass
debris at the 'seal'. Sometimes they seal, sometimes they dont.

**** Try to find an 'industrial' filter company or distributor who will
supply a resin bonded cellulose media of 2.5" dia X 10 inch long filter
cartridge in either depth media ... or better - expanded surface area
pleated configuration. Choose a (documented) retention rating of at
least 15-20 micrometers at least 80% removal efficiency. Reason 1: the
flow rate is MUCH faster with LOWER operating pressure drop; result:
tank turns over FASTER (more efficient total removal .... that will
approach in-the-tank sub-micronic levels in relatively short time
because a pleated filter will have much less resistance to flow). Reason
2: the retention is consistant vs. increasing dirt load and differential
pressure; there is NO consistant removal rating on 'toilet paper' ---
every damn paper mill is 'different'. The deposition of debris on a
toilet paper roll or Hand towel roll is primarily on the surface ....
and the surface area is small in comparison to an expanded surface
pleated filter.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I picked up a spare Walbro pump on Ebay.
