I killed a battery that was new last year by leaving in the ski all winter.
I tried to go cheap by going to the auto parts store and buying new
electrolyte. Charged it up. No luck. Bought a new battery today from
Wal-Mart (16CLB).
My question--Will pulling the battery and keeping it in the garage during
the winter (here in VA the garage can get into the low 40's) keep it alive,
or do I need to hook up one of the battery tenders. I have 2 skis. Can I
alternate the tender if necessary between the two batteries or does each
need its own. Thanks. >> Stay informed about: I killed my battery |

It's not just the cold temps that kill the battery - it loses charge no
matter where it is stored and starts to sulfate the plates. Buy a
battery TENDER (not a trickle charger) or smart charger as they are
sometimes called (go to <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.harborfreight.com" target="_blank">www.harborfreight.com</a> and they often have them
on sale for $7.49, regular price $14.99 - don't let the low price fool
you, I've got eight of them at work all winter and get 4-5 years out of
watercraft batteries). Too bad you already bought the Wally-World
battery or I would have recommended one of the new AGM batteries from
Deka - about $55.00 with much better shelf life and you'll never break a
plate in one like you can with wetcell technology. I've been told that
one battery tender can maintain two batteries but at the price Harbor
Freight sells them for, why chance it.

Tom,
I couldn't find anything called a "battery tender" or "smart charger"
on Harborfreight's website....the only I saw for $14.99 was called
"AUTOMATIC BATTERY FLOAT CHARGER". Was this what you are talking
about?
Thanks,

You can buy the batter tender at any jet ski dealership or shop.

Keith,
That's it. Do the online ordering and type in part number 42292-1HZB
and it will show up at $7.49 (that number is from a recent sale catalog
and it will always give you that price).

Just put it on a charger for a few hours once or twice a month and it
will be fine. I kept mine like that for four years. I just replaced
it for the hell of it but it was still showing a good charge. I run
on the Alleg. River and I don't want to get stuck with a dead battery.

Same for me. I have my original Yuasa battery in my 99 yama XL1200 LTD. Just
keep the battery inside and trickle charge it a few times during the winter.
