Hi all,
I just purchased my first boat: a Santana 21' fiberglass sailboat. It's
in generally good shape but I'd like to repaint the bottom this winter
since the old paint is flaking. I'd like to suspend it over the winter
so I can paint the whole bottom and fix up the trailer but I have some
questions on how to suspend the boat safely.
There are three hard-points or lift-eyes: one port and one starboard in
the center of the fore-aft plane and also one by the transom in the. I
am guessing the boat is approx. 1700 lbs. Would these three eye hooks
be enough to hold it suspended for a few months or are they there just
for temporary usage? or some other purpose all together? Any ideas opr
suggestions would be most helpful...

Chris:

Since the Sanatna 21 is a 'trailer-sailor', I assume you're intending
to paint below the waterline (since the topsides could easily be
painted with the boat on its trailer)?

1700 lbs is a lot of weight to hang on a few lifting hooks.

You're best bet would be jack-stands. They will be in the way, and
you'll have to work around them, but you won't have to worry about
deforming the hull...

Working under a boat while it is hanging from a home made rig is a very
efficient way to get badly hurt. Better to support the boat from below!

Roll in on one side at a time, blocked properly and strapped to the side
of the garage with cargo straps. That way you can finnish one side at a
time without ever having to go under it. I do the bottom of my smaller
Snipe that way in the back yard. I just pull her over by the mast and
do one side at a time.

My last boat was a 22' venture. When it came to painting topsides & bottom, I
would jack the stern up about 1' off trailer & support with a pyrimid made of
timbers & 4x4s , making contact on both port & starboard directly under
transom. Next I would take a 12' (6x6), center it under bow end & jack &
support the ends of the 6x6 until the bottom of the 6x6 cleared the trailer
fenders. Pull the trailer out & add at least ( 4) 2x4x8 s from ground to just
under rubrail for extra stability.
