They run the Appalachians quite a bit with gliders. IIRC, they set a record something around 1000 miles. Just a little bit of turbulence and take the canopy and twist it into a not within a second or two. My last parachute had a wing loading of about 1.5 lbs per sq/ft and the material was what is called zero porosity. And it produced a very rigid airfoil, for a parachute.
