I just purchased a used, home made trailer (dual axel) to haul my boat home
through a private sale. I know I have to get it registered and plated, but
does anyone know the entire process? I have the ownership papers of the
trailer, but what else will I need to transfer it in my name? Will I have to
pay tax on it being it's a homemade trailer?
My apologies if a similar question has been posted in the past. Any advice,
suggestions appreciated.

Tax is supposed to be applicable to anything, it isn't limited to
commercially made items. You would need a bill of sale from the vendor, the
ownership and your personal info to transfer and plate it. If it has never
had an ownership, then you may be in for a rough ride. I know with a home
built car there are exhaustive inspections etc required to road worthy it,
don't know what they do with a trailer, never knew anyone that had to have a
'safety' done on a trailer.. Maybe it just needs an accurate description to
plate it for the first time, don't know.
In most cases, someone at the MTO office will be happy to answer you and it
will be the most accurate answers..

Thanks for the info Greg...like I said, the trailer has been plated before
and I do have the ownership papers already filled out. I just hate paying
taxes on something that has already had tax paid on before, know what I
mean?
Thanks again..

I bought one a while back that had been sitting in a field for a while,
never registered or plated, ect... Huge headache, wanted everything in the
book they could think of. I walked out feeling horrible about the ammount
of work left to be done. someone stopped me in the parking lot and told me
to go to another mto outlet and tell them I built a trailer. Just gave them
verbal info (weight of trailer, when made, material used) and walked out
with a registration slip and a tax-exempt form. took about 5 minutes the
second time. Technically, I did add wheelcovers and the plate holder and
lights, so I finnished the job. In a grey area, you could say I finnished
building it, maybe....
If you end up with a hassle, then.......

Welcome to Canada, tax for this, tax for that. I wouldn't mind it if it
weren't so mismanaged.
The quality of what you get for your tax dollars has also deteriorated. It
is a revenue negative situation. All the tax dollars here and there spent on
licenses, boat cards, FAC etc etc all lose money in the end, preparing and
filing expenses all out weight the funds generated.
So your paying for it one way or the other if you decide to skip out on
paying taxes on your trailer.

Ownership and bill of sale and go pay the tax. At least in Ontario it's only PST
at 8%. In the Maritimes, it's HST (GST & PST "Harmonized") at about 15% (not
sure if all the Maritime provinces are the same).<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: registering a trailer in Ontario |

Meaning you let them drive off with YOUR plate still on the trailer? (I would
guess you were trying to be NICE and let them get it home) You're supposed to
keep the plate portion of the registration and your license plate. When (if)
they register the trailer, they can't use your plate, will have to get a new
one.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: registering a trailer in Ontario |

So I learned after, kind of stupid on my part since I knew a car was that
way..
For some reason I was thinking trailers were different but the only
difference is the plate is for life with no stickers.

Yup, we pay way too many taxes on way too many things....but we have free
health care!!
I'll make a trip to the license office some time this week. Like I said, I
have my part of the trailer ownership permit, but I have no bill of sale.
Hmmmmmm, is it wrong to think what I'm thinking???

remove the serial number and get it replated... call teh mto to see if they
will support a trailer without a serial number, they did in my area.

Once you buy a trailer plate for your trailer, you keep it. When you sell
the trailer, keep the plate and put it on your new trailer. Dont keep paying
unfair taxes. The government has no clue how to manage the tax dollars and
it simply gets pissed away. The taxation system in Canada is on of the worst
in the world, not only for business but also for personal. I wouldn't mind
contributing more but it simply doesn't matter, it makes no difference.
The deficit will soon climb in Ontario now that a liberal leader has been
elected so taxes will soon rise.

You really need to spend more time in alt.gov.ca or whatever there is that
relates. IMO you spend way too much time worrying about gov issues in a
boating group, I think we all now know your feelings, I am certain they are
even echoed among many readers, however this is a boating group, remember
boats? That's what I come here to read about, boats, engines, trips, water
ways and info specific to that topic.

Ok, so whets your point?
You mean, paying taxes on a boat or boat trailer has no place for discussion
in this boat newsgroup? Well, my post was accepted by the moderator so it
must have had valuable input. What are you really trying to say?

The first two sentences pertained to boating (in some degree), the entire
remainder of the paragraph did not but to bitching about government issues.

BOATS!

someone else's opinion on political topics, I will find the flippin group to
do so in!
